About Durrës
Durrës, Albania’s second-largest city, occupies a strategically vital coastal position on the Adriatic Sea, approximately 36 kilometers west of the capital, Tirana. Its geography is defined by a gently sloping coastal plain, rising gradually towards the inland hills of the Albanian coastal range. The terrain is predominantly flat near the shoreline, transitioning to undulating landscapes further inland, influencing urban sprawl and potential pollution dispersion patterns. The city’s location at 41.3133° N, 19.4458° E places it within a Mediterranean climate zone, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This climate significantly impacts air quality dynamics. The surrounding landscape is a mix of agricultural land – primarily olive groves and vineyards – and scattered rural settlements, creating a gradual urban-rural gradient. To the north, the landscape becomes more rugged, while to the south, it remains relatively flat, extending along the coastline. Historically, Durrës has been an important port city, and while industrial activity is present, it’s less concentrated than in Tirana. However, the port itself contributes to localized pollution, particularly from shipping and related logistics. The proximity to the Adriatic Sea provides a natural ventilation pathway, but also introduces marine aerosols and potential salt deposition. The prevailing winds, generally from the northwest, play a crucial role in dispersing pollutants, though stagnant air conditions can occur, especially during summer inversions. The city’s urban character is a blend of historical Ottoman architecture and modern development, with a growing population density impacting local air quality.
Air Quality Across Seasons
Durrës experiences a distinct seasonal cycle influencing its air quality. Summers (June-August) are typically characterized by high temperatures and prolonged periods of calm winds, frequently leading to temperature inversions. These inversions trap pollutants near the ground, exacerbating air quality concerns, particularly in the city center and near industrial areas. Agricultural activities, such as harvesting and burning crop residues, can also contribute to particulate matter during this period. Spring (March-May) brings increased rainfall and stronger winds, which generally improve air quality by flushing out accumulated pollutants. However, dust storms originating from the Albanian highlands can occasionally impact the city. Autumn (September-November) sees a gradual cooling and a return to more frequent winds, leading to a further improvement in air quality. The agricultural season winds down, reducing burning-related emissions. Winters (December-February) are relatively mild and wet, with frequent rainfall helping to cleanse the atmosphere. Fog, however, can occasionally form, trapping pollutants and reducing visibility. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during summer months, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat and potential pollution episodes. Spring dust storms can also pose a risk. Maintaining awareness of local weather conditions and air quality forecasts is crucial for minimizing exposure. Increased ventilation in homes and workplaces during periods of stagnant air is recommended, alongside avoiding strenuous outdoor exercise when air quality is compromised.
