Zhangye's geography is characterized by a semi-arid basin terrain, with the Heihe River—a vital watercourse—flowing through the region, though its limited water volume does little to mitigate particulate matter. The urban area blends into surrounding agricultural zones, particularly oasis farming supported by irrigation from the Qilian snowmelt, which can contribute to dust and agricultural burning emissions during certain seasons. Zhangye's air quality follows a distinct seasonal rhythm, driven by its continental climate and meteorological patterns. In winter, from December to February, cold temperatures and frequent temperature inversions trap pollutants near the ground, exacerbated by coal-based heating systems, making this the peak pollution period; sensitive groups like children and the elderly should limit outdoor activities during these months. Spring, from March to May, brings strong winds that can disperse local emissions but also stir up dust from the Gobi Desert, leading to sporadic spikes in particulate matter—outdoor exercise is best scheduled after dust storms subside. Summer, from June to August, offers the cleanest air due to increased precipitation from occasional monsoon influences and better atmospheric mixing, with July and August being ideal for outdoor pursuits as temperatures rise and pollutants are diluted. Autumn, from September to November, sees a gradual return of stagnant conditions as temperatures drop and wind patterns shift, with October often marking a transition toward poorer air quality; residents with respiratory issues should monitor forecasts closely during this season. Throughout the year, fog can occasionally worsen visibility and pollutant concentration, particularly in low-lying areas.
