About Tuncheng

Tuncheng, nestled on the southwestern coast of Hainan Island, China, occupies a geographically unique position significantly influencing its air quality. Located at approximately 19.36°N, 110.09°E, the city benefits from a subtropical monsoon climate, but its coastal location and surrounding landscape create complex atmospheric dynamics. The terrain is gently undulating, transitioning from coastal plains to low hills inland, with an average elevation of around 20 meters. This relatively flat topography, while facilitating urban development, can also trap pollutants, particularly during periods of low wind. Tuncheng is bordered by the South China Sea to the west, providing a moderating influence on temperatures and humidity, but also introducing potential for marine aerosols. The surrounding landscape is a mix of agricultural land – primarily rubber and tropical fruit plantations – and patches of remnant tropical rainforest. Further inland, the landscape gradually rises, transitioning to more rugged terrain. Hainan's industrial belt, though not directly adjacent to Tuncheng, exerts an indirect influence, with prevailing winds occasionally carrying pollutants from larger industrial centers to the west and north. The urban–rural gradient is relatively sharp, with agricultural activities contributing to localized emissions, particularly from fertilizer use and biomass burning during agricultural cycles. The city’s proximity to Sanya, a major tourist destination, also introduces vehicle emissions and related air pollution, though the distance mitigates the direct impact. The island’s overall isolation, however, limits the influx of pollutants from mainland China, a factor that generally improves air quality compared to more inland Chinese cities.

Air Quality Across Seasons

Tuncheng’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern dictated by its subtropical monsoon climate. The wet season, typically spanning from May to October, brings frequent rainfall and high humidity, generally leading to improved air quality as precipitation washes away particulate matter. Monsoon winds during this period also help disperse pollutants. However, periods of prolonged rainfall can also lead to increased humidity and stagnant air, occasionally trapping pollutants near the surface. The dry season, from November to April, presents a different challenge. Reduced rainfall and lower humidity contribute to a build-up of pollutants. Temperature inversions, common during the cooler months (December-February), trap cooler air near the ground, preventing vertical mixing and exacerbating pollution. Agricultural burning, though regulated, can still occur during this period, releasing smoke and particulate matter. March and April often see increased dust from regional sources, further degrading air quality. The months of January and February are generally the most challenging for air quality, with increased likelihood of stagnant conditions and temperature inversions. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should limit outdoor activity during these periods, particularly during early morning hours when inversions are most pronounced. During the wet season, while overall air quality is better, high humidity can still trigger respiratory issues in some individuals. Maintaining indoor air quality through ventilation and air purification is advisable year-round, with particular attention during periods of elevated pollution.
