About Yongbei

Yongbei, nestled within Yunnan Province in southwestern China, occupies a geographically complex and strategically important position. Located at approximately 26.6462° N, 100.7807° E, the city sits at an elevation of roughly 1,850 meters (6,070 feet) above sea level, placing it firmly within the mountainous terrain characteristic of Yunnan. This high altitude significantly influences local climate and, consequently, air quality. Yongbei is surrounded by a landscape dominated by karst formations – dramatic limestone landscapes sculpted by erosion – and dense subtropical forests. The surrounding hills act as both a barrier and a funnel for air masses, potentially trapping pollutants under stable atmospheric conditions. While not directly adjacent to major rivers, the region receives substantial rainfall due to the monsoon patterns impacting Yunnan, which can help to cleanse the air, but also contribute to humidity and fog formation. The urban–rural gradient around Yongbei is relatively sharp; the city transitions quickly into agricultural lands, primarily focused on terraced rice cultivation and fruit orchards. Further afield, the landscape becomes increasingly dominated by forested slopes and remote villages. Industrial activity in the immediate vicinity is limited, but Yongbei’s location within Yunnan Province means it is connected to broader regional industrial belts, particularly those associated with mineral extraction and processing, which can contribute to transboundary pollution events. The city’s position within a valley further exacerbates the potential for pollutant accumulation, especially during periods of low wind speed.

Air Quality Across Seasons

Yongbei’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern dictated by Yunnan’s monsoon climate. The wet season, typically spanning May to October, brings frequent rainfall and relatively cleaner air. The monsoon winds help disperse pollutants, and the high humidity often leads to fog, which can trap particulate matter but also facilitates its removal through precipitation. However, periods of prolonged rainfall can also lead to increased soil moisture and subsequent release of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which can contribute to ozone formation. The dry season, from November to April, presents a more challenging air quality scenario. Temperature inversions are common during these months, particularly in November and December, where cold air settles in the valleys, trapping warmer air and any associated pollutants aloft. Reduced wind speeds during this period further exacerbate the problem, preventing effective dispersion. Agricultural burning, a common practice in the surrounding rural areas to clear fields for planting, also significantly contributes to particulate matter pollution during the dry season. January and February often experience the poorest air quality. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should limit outdoor activity during these months, especially during periods of visible haze or fog. Spring (March-April) sees a gradual improvement as temperatures rise and winds increase, but lingering agricultural burning can still impact air quality. The summer months (June-August) are generally the most favourable for outdoor activities, although occasional heavy rainfall events can temporarily disrupt air quality.
