About Diinsoor

Diinsoor, situated in the Bay region of Somalia at approximately 2.4085° N, 42.9771° E, occupies a geographically significant position within a semi-arid landscape. The city’s terrain is predominantly characterized by gently undulating plains, typical of the southern Somali plateau, with elevations rarely exceeding a few hundred meters above sea level. This relatively flat topography, while facilitating urban expansion, can also contribute to the stagnation of air pollutants, particularly during periods of low wind. Diinsoor lies within a transitional zone between the more arid northern regions and the slightly wetter southern areas, influencing its climate and vegetation patterns. The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of sparse acacia woodlands, grasslands, and agricultural fields, primarily supporting livestock grazing and rain-fed agriculture – sorghum, maize, and vegetables are common crops. The urban–rural gradient around Diinsoor is gradual, with scattered rural settlements and nomadic pastoralism extending outwards. While not directly adjacent to major rivers, the area experiences seasonal rainfall, which can lead to localized flooding and temporary changes in surface water availability. There are no significant industrial belts nearby; the local economy is largely agrarian and dependent on livestock. The lack of heavy industry is a mitigating factor for air pollution, however, the burning of biomass for cooking and heating, coupled with vehicle emissions from a growing population, are the primary contributors to localized air quality concerns. The open nature of the landscape allows for some dispersion of pollutants, but prevailing wind patterns play a crucial role in determining air quality fluctuations.

Air Quality Across Seasons

Diinsoor’s air quality is intrinsically linked to its distinct wet and dry seasons, a characteristic of Somalia’s tropical climate. The dry season, typically spanning from June to October, is marked by consistently high temperatures and minimal rainfall. This period often sees a build-up of pollutants due to reduced atmospheric cleansing. The lack of rain means fewer particles are washed from the air, and stagnant air conditions, frequently exacerbated by temperature inversions where cooler air traps warmer air aloft, can trap emissions close to the ground. Vehicle exhaust and the widespread use of wood and charcoal for cooking and heating become more concentrated during these months. The months of July and August are particularly concerning, with increased respiratory irritation reported. Conversely, the wet season, from November to May, brings more frequent rainfall and increased humidity. These conditions naturally scrub the atmosphere, removing particulate matter and reducing overall pollution levels. Stronger winds associated with the monsoon season also aid in dispersing pollutants. However, periods of heavy fog, common during the transition months (November/December and April/May), can temporarily reduce visibility and trap pollutants near the surface. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during the dry season, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat and avoiding areas with high traffic density. Maintaining good ventilation in homes and using cleaner cooking fuels, where possible, are also advisable.
