Bougaa, nestled within the Sétif Province of Algeria, occupies a geographically significant position in the Haut Plateaux region. Located at coordinates 36.3333° N, 5.0833° E, the city sits at an elevation of approximately 900 meters (2,953 feet) above sea level, contributing to a cooler, more temperate climate than many other parts of Algeria. The surrounding landscape is characterised by rolling plateaus and fertile agricultural lands, primarily dedicated to cereal crops and olive groves. Bougaa isn’t directly adjacent to a major body of water, though smaller wadis and seasonal streams dissect the region. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp; the city itself is a concentrated hub, quickly transitioning to agricultural fields and sparsely populated rural areas. While Bougaa isn’t a major industrial centre like some Algerian coastal cities, the presence of smaller-scale industrial activity related to agricultural processing and local manufacturing contributes to localised emissions. The terrain, while generally flat, features gentle undulations that can influence wind patterns and pollutant dispersion. The city’s position within a valley-like formation can occasionally trap pollutants, particularly during temperature inversions, exacerbating air quality concerns. The prevailing winds are generally from the west, carrying potential pollutants from regional sources.
Bougaa experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, profoundly impacting its air quality. Summer (June-August) often sees a deterioration in air quality due to increased temperatures promoting ground-level ozone formation, exacerbated by stagnant air masses. Dust storms, originating from the Sahara Desert to the south, are also common during these months, significantly increasing particulate matter concentrations. Autumn (September-November) brings a gradual improvement as temperatures cool and rainfall increases, washing away accumulated pollutants. However, agricultural burning of crop residue after harvest can temporarily spike particulate matter levels. Winter (December-February) generally offers the best air quality, with increased precipitation and stronger winds dispersing pollutants. However, temperature inversions, where a layer of warm air traps cooler air near the ground, can occur, leading to localised pollution build-up, particularly from residential heating using wood or charcoal. Spring (March-May) sees a transition period with fluctuating conditions. March and April can be dusty, while May benefits from increased rainfall. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should be particularly cautious during summer and periods of agricultural burning. Avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak pollution times is advisable.
