Quilevo, a municipality within the Uíge Province of Angola, is situated at approximately -7.6167 latitude and 15.0500 longitude. The city’s geography is defined by its location within the northern Angolan plateau, a region characterized by undulating terrain and dense tropical rainforest. Elevation plays a crucial role; while not dramatically high, the plateau provides some natural drainage, though localised flooding can occur during the intense rainy seasons. Quilevo isn’t directly adjacent to major bodies of water, but is interwoven with a network of smaller rivers and streams that feed into larger systems further west. The surrounding landscape is predominantly agricultural, with subsistence farming of crops like cassava, maize, and coffee being prevalent. This agricultural activity, while vital to the local economy, contributes to particulate matter pollution through land clearing and burning of agricultural waste. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp, with Quilevo representing a concentrated hub amidst a largely rural backdrop. Limited industrial development within Quilevo itself means that regional transport routes, carrying goods to and from Uíge city and beyond, are a more significant source of localised emissions. The prevailing winds, influenced by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, impact the dispersion of pollutants, often concentrating them during periods of calm.
Quilevo experiences a distinct tropical climate, dominated by alternating wet and dry seasons rather than traditional four seasons. Air quality in Quilevo is significantly impacted by these shifts. The dry season, roughly from June to October, sees a peak in particulate matter pollution. This is due to increased dust from unpaved roads, agricultural burning preparing fields for the next planting cycle, and reduced rainfall to wash pollutants from the atmosphere. Temperature inversions, common during the cooler nights of the dry season, trap pollutants near ground level, exacerbating the issue. The wet season, from November to May, generally brings improved air quality as rainfall effectively scrubs the air. However, increased humidity can promote the formation of mould spores, impacting respiratory health. November and December often see a transitional period with lingering dust and the onset of humidity. February and March, during peak rainfall, are typically the most favourable months for outdoor activity. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor exposure during the dry season and be mindful of mould growth during the wet season. Monitoring local conditions and avoiding peak traffic hours are also recommended.
