Iguaí, nestled in the southwestern region of Bahia, Brazil, presents a unique geographic context influencing its air quality. Located at -14.7558 latitude and -40.0889 longitude, the city sits within a transitional zone between the semi-arid Caatinga biome and the more humid Atlantic Forest. The terrain is characterized by gently rolling hills and plateaus, typical of the region’s ancient crystalline shield. Iguaí’s elevation, averaging around 350 meters, contributes to localized temperature inversions, potentially trapping pollutants. The Rio Iguaí, from which the city derives its name, flows nearby, providing a vital water source but also influencing humidity levels and potentially contributing to localized fog formation. Surrounding Iguaí is a predominantly agricultural landscape, dominated by cattle ranching and, increasingly, soybean and corn cultivation. While Iguaí isn’t a major industrial hub, the agricultural activities contribute to particulate matter from land preparation, harvesting, and the use of agricultural machinery. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp, with the city center being the most concentrated area of activity and potential pollution sources, while the surrounding areas remain largely rural. This proximity to agricultural lands and the specific topography create conditions where pollutants can accumulate, impacting local air quality.
Iguaí experiences a distinct wet and dry season, heavily influencing air quality. The dry season, typically from May to September, sees significantly reduced rainfall and increased dust and particulate matter in the air. Agricultural activities, such as land preparation for planting, are at their peak during this period, exacerbating the issue. Lower humidity also means pollutants are less likely to be washed away by rain. Temperature inversions are more frequent during the cooler nights of the dry season, trapping pollutants near the ground. October to April marks the wet season, bringing relief from dust and a natural cleansing effect on the atmosphere. However, even during the wet season, localized pollution from vehicle emissions and small-scale burning of agricultural residue can occur. February and March, being the wettest months, generally offer the best air quality. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should be particularly cautious during the dry season, limiting strenuous outdoor activity and monitoring their health. Fog, common during the transition periods, can also trap pollutants. Avoiding outdoor exercise during peak agricultural activity in the dry season is advisable.
