Sapeaçu, nestled in the state of Bahia, Brazil, occupies a geographically significant position within the broader Recôncavo Baiano region. Located at approximately -12.7278 latitude and -39.1819 longitude, the city’s terrain is characterized by gently rolling hills transitioning into the flatter coastal plains. This area is part of the larger Atlantic Forest biome, though significant portions have been converted to agricultural land. Sapeaçu’s elevation is relatively low, contributing to limited atmospheric dispersion of pollutants. The city is situated inland, approximately 30km from the coast, and benefits from proximity to the Paraguaçu River, a vital waterway for regional transport and agriculture. Surrounding Sapeaçu are extensive areas dedicated to cocoa and palm oil cultivation, alongside smaller-scale subsistence farming. The urban-rural gradient is pronounced; the city centre represents a concentrated area of activity, while the periphery quickly dissolves into agricultural landscapes. This proximity to agricultural activities, particularly those involving burning for land clearing, significantly influences local air quality. The prevailing winds, generally from the southeast, can carry pollutants from these sources directly over the city, exacerbating air quality concerns. The lack of substantial industrial development within Sapeaçu itself doesn’t negate the impact of regional agricultural practices and occasional long-range transport of pollutants.
Sapeaçu experiences a tropical climate with a distinct wet and dry season, rather than traditional four seasons. Air quality in Sapeaçu is most compromised during the dry season, typically from August to December. This period sees reduced rainfall, leading to increased dust and particulate matter in the air, exacerbated by agricultural burning to prepare fields for planting. Lower humidity also hinders the natural settling of pollutants. Temperature inversions, common during cooler nights within the dry season, trap pollutants near ground level, further degrading air quality. The wet season, from January to July, generally brings improved air quality due to rainfall washing away pollutants and increased humidity suppressing dust. However, even during the wet season, localized pollution events can occur from agricultural activities. February and March, often the wettest months, are generally the most favourable for outdoor activity. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions – should exercise caution during the dry season, limiting strenuous outdoor activity and monitoring their health. Periods of intense agricultural activity, regardless of season, should also be avoided. Fog, common in the early mornings, can temporarily trap pollutants, creating localized poor air quality conditions.
