Pio XII, nestled in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, occupies a unique geographical position within the Amazon rainforest’s transition zone to the Cerrado savanna. Located at -3.8939 latitude and -45.1700 longitude, the city sits on relatively flat terrain, typical of the Amazon basin, with an elevation generally below 50 meters. This low elevation contributes to potential humidity and stagnant air conditions. The city is situated inland, approximately 250 kilometers from the Atlantic coastline, lessening the direct influence of marine breezes but still experiencing a humid equatorial climate. Surrounding Pio XII is a landscape dominated by dense tropical rainforest, interspersed with areas of agricultural land, primarily dedicated to subsistence farming and increasingly, larger-scale soy and cattle production. The urban-rural gradient is sharp; the city itself is a relatively small settlement, quickly giving way to extensive agricultural and forested areas. Air quality is intrinsically linked to this landscape; deforestation for agriculture introduces particulate matter from burning, while the humid climate can trap pollutants. The lack of significant industrial activity within Pio XII itself means regional agricultural practices are the dominant influence on local air composition. The Parnaíba River, a major waterway, is a significant regional feature, though its distance from the city centre limits its direct impact on Pio XII’s immediate air quality.
Pio XII experiences a distinct wet and dry season, rather than traditional four seasons. Air quality is most compromised during the dry season, typically from June to November. This period sees increased agricultural burning to clear land for planting, releasing substantial amounts of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. Reduced rainfall during these months also means less atmospheric cleansing. Temperature inversions, common in the mornings, exacerbate the problem by trapping pollutants near ground level. The wet season, from December to May, generally brings improved air quality. Frequent rainfall washes away pollutants, and higher humidity can suppress dust. However, even during the wet season, localised burning can still occur, impacting air quality. February and March, towards the end of the wet season, often experience higher humidity and potential for fungal spore dispersal, which can affect respiratory health. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor activity during the peak of the dry season (August-October). Monitoring wind patterns is crucial; winds from agricultural areas will carry pollutants directly into the city. Avoiding strenuous activity during periods of visible haze is advisable, and using air purifiers indoors can offer additional protection.
