Jaicós, nestled in the semi-arid heartland of Piauí, Brazil, presents a unique geographic context influencing its air quality. Located at -7.3592 latitude and -41.1378 longitude, the city sits within the broader Caatinga biome, a landscape characterised by thorny scrubland and resilient vegetation adapted to prolonged droughts. The terrain is gently undulating, part of the Parnaíba River basin’s transition zone, though Jaicós itself isn’t directly on the river. Elevation is relatively low, around 280-300 meters, contributing to limited atmospheric dispersion. The urban area of Jaicós, home to approximately 19,170 residents, is surrounded by agricultural lands, primarily dedicated to subsistence farming and livestock raising. While not a major industrial hub, small-scale processing of agricultural products does occur, potentially contributing to localised emissions. The urban-rural gradient is fairly sharp; the city is a relatively concentrated settlement within a vast, sparsely populated region. Dust from agricultural activities and unpaved roads is a significant factor, exacerbated by the region’s aridity. The lack of substantial forest cover limits natural air purification processes. Wind patterns, often influenced by regional pressure systems, play a crucial role in pollutant transport and dispersion, but can also carry dust plumes from distant areas.
Jaicós experiences a pronounced wet-dry seasonal cycle rather than traditional four seasons. Air quality is typically poorest during the prolonged dry season, spanning roughly August to December. This period sees minimal rainfall, leading to increased dust resuspension from agricultural lands and unpaved roads. High temperatures and intense sunlight contribute to photochemical smog formation, particularly from vehicle emissions and small-scale agricultural processing. Wind speeds are often lower during this time, reducing pollutant dispersion. The wet season, from January to July, brings significant improvements in air quality. Rainfall effectively suppresses dust, and increased humidity washes pollutants from the atmosphere. However, even during the wet season, localised pollution can occur due to stagnant air masses and temperature inversions, especially in the early morning hours. February and March, with consistent rainfall, generally offer the most favourable conditions for outdoor activity. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor exposure during the peak of the dry season (September-November). Monitoring local weather patterns and avoiding strenuous activity on dusty days is crucial for maintaining respiratory health.
