Nkongsamba, situated in Cameroon’s Littoral Region, occupies a unique geographic position within the country’s diverse landscape. Located at coordinates 4.9500, 9.9333, the city lies in a transitional zone between the coastal plains and the forested highlands. The terrain is characterized by undulating hills and valleys, a result of volcanic activity and erosion over millennia. Nkongsamba’s elevation, approximately 180 meters above sea level, moderates temperatures but doesn’t fully escape the humidity typical of the region. The city is positioned relatively close to the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 60 kilometers inland, influencing local weather patterns and contributing to high humidity levels. Surrounding Nkongsamba are extensive agricultural zones, primarily dedicated to cocoa, coffee, and banana plantations, alongside pockets of rainforest. A noticeable urban-rural gradient exists, with denser settlements concentrated around the city center and progressively more dispersed agricultural land further out. This agricultural activity, coupled with increasing small-scale industrial operations (rubber processing, palm oil extraction) and the growing use of motorcycles for transport, contributes to localized air pollution. The city’s location within a valley can also exacerbate pollution by trapping emissions, particularly during periods of calm weather. The Douala-Nkongsamba corridor is a major transport route, further impacting air quality.
Nkongsamba experiences a tropical monsoon climate, defined by distinct wet and dry seasons rather than traditional four seasons. Air quality fluctuates significantly throughout the year, largely dictated by meteorological conditions. The long dry season, typically from November to March, sees a peak in particulate matter pollution. Reduced rainfall means less atmospheric cleansing, and increased dust from unpaved roads and agricultural activities becomes prevalent. Harmattan winds, blowing from the Sahara, can also transport significant amounts of dust, further degrading air quality. Temperature inversions, common during the cooler nights of the dry season, trap pollutants near ground level. The wet season, spanning April to October, generally brings improved air quality due to frequent rainfall washing away pollutants. However, increased humidity can promote the formation of mold and allergens, impacting respiratory health. August and September, often the wettest months, offer the most favourable conditions for outdoor activity. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should exercise caution during the dry season, limiting strenuous outdoor activity and considering the use of masks when dust levels are high. Monitoring local weather reports is crucial for planning outdoor activities.
