Shiqiao, nestled within Gansu Province in Northwest China, occupies a geographically complex position along the Loess Plateau. Situated at coordinates 34.1418°N, 105.1214°E, the city’s elevation of approximately 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) contributes to a cooler, drier climate. The surrounding landscape is characterized by undulating loess hills, deeply eroded by the Wei River and its tributaries. This terrain significantly influences air quality, as the loose loess soil is easily mobilized by wind, contributing to substantial particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) concentrations, particularly during drier periods. Shiqiao isn’t directly adjacent to major bodies of water, but the Wei River’s influence on local humidity and potential for temperature inversions is notable. While not a heavy industrial hub itself, Shiqiao is positioned within a region experiencing increasing industrial activity in nearby cities like Lanzhou, and agricultural practices, including fertilizer use, contribute to ammonia emissions. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp; the city itself is compact with a population of around 29,050, quickly transitioning to agricultural land and sparsely populated loess hills. This proximity to agricultural zones and the prevailing wind patterns can transport pollutants into and out of the city, impacting local air quality.
Air quality in Shiqiao exhibits a distinct seasonal pattern. Spring (March-May) often sees a surge in pollution due to dust storms originating from the Gobi Desert and the increased use of coal for heating as temperatures remain cool. The winds, while sometimes offering dispersal, can also concentrate dust locally. Summer (June-August) generally brings improved air quality, with occasional rainfall helping to suppress dust and wash pollutants from the atmosphere. However, increased agricultural activity during this period can elevate ammonia levels. Autumn (September-November) is often considered the most pleasant time for air quality, with cooler temperatures and relatively stable atmospheric conditions. However, the burning of agricultural residue after harvest can lead to localized spikes in particulate matter. Winter (December-February) is typically the worst period for air quality. Cold temperatures drive increased coal consumption for heating, and frequent temperature inversions trap pollutants near the ground. Fog is also common, exacerbating the problem. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor activity during spring and winter. Months to favour for outdoor activity are July and August, but even then, monitoring conditions is advisable.
