Donggou, nestled within Shanxi Province, China, occupies a geographically complex position at coordinates 35.5600°N, 112.7028°E. The city’s terrain is characterised by the foothills of the Taihang Mountains, contributing to a varied topography of valleys and slopes. This mountainous backdrop significantly influences local wind patterns, often creating stagnant air pockets that exacerbate pollution. Donggou’s elevation, averaging around 1,400 meters, further contributes to temperature inversions, trapping pollutants near the ground. The Fen River flows nearby, but its capacity to naturally cleanse the air is limited given the surrounding industrial activity. Shanxi Province is a major coal-producing region, and Donggou is situated within a broader industrial belt focused on energy production and heavy manufacturing. This proximity to sources of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants is a primary driver of air quality concerns. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp; the city centre is densely populated, while surrounding areas are dominated by agricultural land and mining operations. This creates a complex interplay of emissions sources, with rural activities contributing to dust and agricultural burning, while industrial processes dominate urban pollution profiles. The landscape’s natural features, while scenic, unfortunately funnel and concentrate pollutants, making Donggou particularly vulnerable to poor air quality.
Donggou experiences a distinct seasonal air quality pattern dictated by climate and human activity. Winter (November to March) is typically the worst period. Reduced sunlight hours, coupled with increased coal combustion for heating, lead to a build-up of particulate matter and sulfur dioxide. Temperature inversions are frequent, trapping pollutants close to the ground. Spring (April-May) sees a gradual improvement as temperatures rise and heating demand decreases, but dust storms originating from the Gobi Desert can significantly impact air quality. These storms bring large quantities of PM10. Summer (June-August) generally offers the cleanest air, benefiting from monsoon rains that help to wash away pollutants and increased wind speeds that disperse emissions. However, localised thunderstorms can stir up dust. Autumn (September-October) is a transitional period, with air quality declining as heating systems are reactivated. Fog is common during autumn mornings, exacerbating pollution. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should avoid strenuous outdoor activity during winter and spring. Monitoring wind direction is crucial; periods of calm or winds from industrial areas should be avoided. The months of July and August generally present the most favourable conditions for outdoor activities, though localised pollution events can still occur.
