Located at coordinates 6.5383, -75.0886, the town’s elevation of approximately 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) significantly influences its climate and, consequently, its air quality. The surrounding landscape is characterised by steep, verdant mountains, deeply incised river valleys, and a mosaic of smallholder farms. Cisneros lies within a region dominated by coffee cultivation, alongside banana and plantain production, contributing to potential agricultural emissions. The town itself is relatively small, with a population of around 11,555, exhibiting a typical rural-urban gradient where residential areas blend into agricultural land. Its proximity to the Cauca River, a major waterway, introduces humidity and can contribute to localised fog formation, trapping pollutants. While not directly within a major industrial belt, regional industrial activity in nearby Medellín can contribute to long-range transport of pollutants.
