Préveza, nestled on the Ionian coast of Ípeiros, Greece, occupies a unique geographic position. The city sprawls across a low-lying coastal plain, bordered to the east by the rugged mountains of Epirus and opening westward to the Ionian Sea. Its coordinates (38.9575, 20.7517) place it at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf, a significant inland waterway. The terrain is largely flat near the coast, gradually rising towards the mountainous interior. This proximity to both sea and mountains profoundly influences local air quality. The Ionian Sea provides a moderating influence on temperatures and often delivers prevailing winds that can disperse pollutants. However, the surrounding mountains can also trap air masses, leading to localized pollution build-up, particularly during temperature inversions. The region is characterized by a blend of agricultural land – olive groves and citrus orchards dominate – and a growing tourism sector. While Préveza itself isn’t heavily industrialized, nearby areas experience some industrial activity related to port operations and processing of agricultural products. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp, with agricultural areas immediately surrounding the city, transitioning to more remote mountainous landscapes. This gradient impacts pollutant dispersion, as rural areas act as sinks or sources depending on agricultural practices.
Préveza’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern, largely dictated by meteorological conditions. Summer months (June-August) generally experience the best air quality, benefiting from consistent sea breezes that effectively dilute pollutants. However, increased tourist activity and associated vehicle emissions can cause localized spikes, particularly near the port and popular beaches. Autumn (September-November) sees a gradual deterioration as temperatures fall and wind patterns become less consistent, increasing the likelihood of temperature inversions trapping pollutants. Winter (December-February) is often the most challenging period. Reduced sunlight and stable atmospheric conditions exacerbate pollution from domestic heating, primarily wood burning, and vehicle exhaust. Fog, common during winter, further concentrates particulate matter. Spring (March-May) brings a transition, with improving conditions as temperatures rise and winds return, but agricultural burning practices can contribute to temporary pollution episodes. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit strenuous outdoor activity during winter and periods of fog. Avoiding peak traffic hours and staying informed about local conditions is advisable year-round. The prevailing winds from the Ionian Sea offer some relief, but localized conditions can vary significantly.
