Chichicastenango, nestled within the Guatemalan highlands in the department of Quiché, occupies a geographically complex position significantly influencing its air quality. The city sits at an elevation of approximately 1,985 meters (6,512 feet), contributing to cooler temperatures and a tendency for temperature inversions. It’s cradled within a valley, surrounded by steep, forested mountains – remnants of ancient volcanic activity – which limit atmospheric circulation. This topography traps pollutants, particularly during calm weather conditions. The surrounding landscape is predominantly rural, characterized by small-scale subsistence agriculture, primarily maize cultivation, and coffee plantations. While not heavily industrialized, the widespread use of traditional cooking methods employing wood and charcoal within homes and markets is a major source of particulate matter. The Pasac River flows nearby, but its impact on local air quality is less direct than the mountainous terrain and combustion sources. The urban-rural gradient is sharp; the city centre is densely populated, with traditional Mayan architecture, quickly transitioning to agricultural lands. Dust from unpaved roads and agricultural activities further contributes to particulate pollution, especially during the dry season. The city’s location within a region experiencing deforestation also exacerbates erosion and dust levels, impacting respiratory health.
Chichicastenango experiences a pronounced wet and dry season, dictating the city’s air quality patterns. The dry season, typically from November to April, sees a significant increase in particulate matter pollution. Reduced rainfall means less atmospheric cleansing, and agricultural burning for land preparation becomes common, releasing substantial smoke. Dust from unpaved roads is also more prevalent. January and February are generally the months with the poorest air quality. The wet season, from May to October, brings relief. Frequent rainfall washes away pollutants, and humidity reduces dust levels. However, increased cloud cover can contribute to temperature inversions, trapping pollutants near the ground, particularly in the mornings. September and October, during the peak of the rainy season, often experience calmer winds, potentially leading to localized pollution build-up. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the dry season, especially in January and February. During the wet season, monitoring for temperature inversions is advisable. Traditional cooking practices contribute year-round, but are more noticeable when ventilation is reduced during wetter, cooler periods. Avoiding peak market times can also reduce exposure.
