Situated at an elevation of approximately 22 meters above sea level, the city occupies a flat, fertile alluvial plain characterized by its proximity to the Tammileru River, which flows directly through the urban core. This low-lying topography is defined by an intricate network of irrigation canals and the sprawling Kolleru Lake—one of India’s largest freshwater ecosystems—located just to the east. The city’s urban character is a blend of traditional agrarian roots and emerging industrial expansion, with the surrounding landscape dominated by intensive paddy cultivation, aquaculture ponds, and vibrant horticultural zones. From an air quality perspective, Eluru’s geography is a double-edged sword. While the city benefits from proximity to the Bay of Bengal, which facilitates regular coastal breezes that help flush out urban pollutants, its inland position can lead to stagnant air during periods of low wind speed. The urban-rural gradient is subtle, as agricultural activities often merge with residential sprawl, leading to localized biomass burning and dust suspension from unpaved rural roads. Eluru experiences a distinct tropical climate governed by the seasonal monsoons, which dictate the rhythm of air quality throughout the year. The pre-monsoon summer, spanning from March to June, is marked by high temperatures and intense solar radiation, which typically promotes atmospheric mixing and helps disperse ground-level pollutants. However, this period is also characterized by dust storms originating from the dry, surrounding agricultural fields.
