Medchal, situated in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, at coordinates 17.6297°N, 78.4814°E, is a rapidly urbanising town with a population of approximately 35,611. Its geography is characterised by relatively flat terrain, typical of the Deccan Plateau, though gentle undulations are present. The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of agricultural lands, primarily paddy fields and cotton farms, interspersed with rocky outcrops and small hills. Medchal’s location within the Medchal-Malkajgiri district places it close to the expanding urban sprawl of Hyderabad, approximately 40km to the southwest, creating a strong urban-rural gradient. This proximity significantly influences air quality, as pollutants from the larger metropolitan area can be transported by prevailing winds. The Musi River flows nearby, but its capacity to naturally cleanse the air is limited due to industrial discharge and agricultural runoff. The area isn’t heavily forested, reducing natural filtration. Furthermore, Medchal is experiencing industrial growth, particularly in the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, contributing to localised emissions. The lack of significant natural barriers to wind flow means pollutants can accumulate during periods of low wind speed and temperature inversions, exacerbating air quality concerns. The terrain’s flatness also hinders dispersion.
Medchal’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern dictated by the monsoon and prevailing wind directions. The post-monsoon months, October to February, generally offer the cleanest air. The monsoon rains (June-September) wash away accumulated pollutants, but high humidity can trap lower-level emissions. However, the dry season, from March to May, sees a significant deterioration in air quality. Rising temperatures and stagnant air create ideal conditions for pollutant build-up, particularly dust and particulate matter from construction and agricultural activities. The summer months are also prone to intense heat waves, which can exacerbate respiratory problems. November and December are typically the most favourable months for outdoor activity, with cooler temperatures and clearer skies. Conversely, April and May should be approached with caution, especially for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. During the monsoon, while air is cleaner, the increased humidity can trigger fungal growth and exacerbate allergies. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses – should limit outdoor exposure during peak pollution periods and consider using air purifiers indoors. Wind patterns shift with the seasons, influencing pollutant transport from Hyderabad.
