Sadhoa, Bihar, situated at approximately 25.4049° N, 87.1980° E, occupies a geographically significant position within the fertile Gangetic plains of eastern India. The city’s terrain is predominantly flat, characteristic of the Indo-Gangetic Plain, with an elevation of roughly 55 meters above sea level. This low-lying topography, while conducive to agriculture, presents challenges regarding air quality dispersion. Sadhoa lies within a region heavily reliant on agriculture, particularly rice and maize cultivation, and is surrounded by expansive rural landscapes. To the west, the landscape gradually transitions towards slightly undulating terrain, while eastward, the plains extend towards the Ganges River, though Sadhoa itself lacks direct riverine access. The proximity to agricultural zones means seasonal burning of crop residue is a significant factor influencing local air quality. Further afield, industrial belts concentrated in areas like Dhanbad (coal mining and related industries) and industrial zones around Patna exert a regional influence, with pollutants potentially transported by prevailing winds. The urban–rural gradient around Sadhoa is relatively sharp; the city represents a small, localized urban center embedded within a predominantly rural matrix. This limits the urban heat island effect, but also means that agricultural practices and regional industrial emissions have a disproportionately large impact on the city's air quality. The flat terrain and lack of significant topographical barriers hinder the natural dispersal of pollutants, leading to potential stagnation and accumulation, especially during periods of low wind speed.
Sadhoa’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern dictated by the region’s monsoon climate. The pre-monsoon season (March-May) typically witnesses the worst air quality conditions. High temperatures and stagnant air, often accompanied by dense fog, create ideal conditions for pollutant accumulation. Temperature inversions, common during this period, trap pollutants near the ground, exacerbating the problem. Agricultural burning, a widespread practice following the harvest of winter crops, contributes significantly to particulate matter pollution. The monsoon season (June-September) brings relief as increased rainfall and stronger winds naturally cleanse the atmosphere, significantly reducing pollution levels. However, heavy rainfall can also lead to waterlogging and the release of pollutants from stagnant water. The post-monsoon season (October-November) sees a gradual return to poorer air quality as temperatures drop and wind speeds decrease, although not as severe as the pre-monsoon period. December and January are characterized by cold, foggy conditions, which, while reducing sunlight, also trap pollutants, leading to periods of moderate to poor air quality. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, limiting outdoor activities during peak pollution times. Maintaining indoor air quality through ventilation and air purifiers is also advisable. The monsoon months offer the most favorable period for outdoor activities, though vigilance regarding waterborne diseases remains important.
