Jasidih, a small city nestled in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, India, occupies a unique geographic position within the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Situated at coordinates 24.5138°N, 86.6458°E, the city’s terrain is characterised by undulating hills and valleys, typical of the plateau’s dissected landscape. The elevation, averaging around 220 meters (722 feet) above sea level, influences local wind patterns and contributes to temperature variations. Jasidih isn’t directly adjacent to a major body of water, though smaller rivers and streams meander through the surrounding areas, providing limited natural dispersion for pollutants. The city is deeply embedded within the coal belt of Jharkhand, a significant factor impacting its air quality. Extensive coal mining activities, both legal and illegal, and associated industries like brick kilns and power plants dominate the regional economy. This industrial concentration creates a substantial source of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp; Jasidih is surrounded by agricultural land, primarily rice paddies and forests, but the proximity to heavy industry overrides the mitigating effects of these green spaces. The city’s growth is largely driven by migration linked to the coal industry, leading to increased population density and strain on infrastructure, further exacerbating air quality challenges.
Jasidih experiences a distinct seasonal air quality pattern. The winter months (November to February) consistently present the poorest air quality. Lower temperatures lead to increased use of solid fuels for heating, and temperature inversions trap pollutants near the ground, hindering dispersion. Calm wind conditions further worsen the situation. March and April bring a slight improvement as temperatures rise and winds pick up, but dust storms originating from the arid regions of western India can temporarily elevate particulate matter levels. The monsoon season (June to September) offers a period of respite. Heavy rainfall effectively washes away pollutants, and increased humidity promotes settling of dust. However, increased cloud cover can also contribute to localised temperature inversions. October sees a gradual deterioration as the monsoon retreats and agricultural burning begins, releasing significant amounts of smoke and particulate matter. For sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – avoiding outdoor activity during winter mornings and evenings is crucial. The monsoon months generally offer the most favourable conditions for outdoor activity, but vigilance is still needed due to potential localised pollution events. The post-monsoon period requires caution due to agricultural practices.
