Guttal, nestled in the Belagavi district of Karnataka, India, occupies a geographically significant position within the Deccan Plateau. Located at approximately 14.83°N, 75.63°E, the town’s terrain is characterized by gently undulating hills and valleys, typical of the region's basaltic landscape. Its elevation, around 600 meters above sea level, contributes to a relatively moderate climate, but also influences local air circulation patterns. Guttal sits on the edge of a transitional zone, bordering both agricultural lands and the fringes of the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot. The surrounding landscape is predominantly rural, featuring sugarcane fields, paddy crops, and interspersed groves of mango and other fruit trees. This agricultural activity, while vital to the local economy, can contribute to seasonal particulate matter pollution, particularly during harvest periods when biomass burning is common. The town’s urban character is small and relatively compact, with a gradual urban-rural gradient extending outwards. While Guttal itself lacks major heavy industries, its proximity to Belagavi, a larger industrial hub, means that pollutants can be transported via prevailing winds. The lack of significant water bodies within immediate proximity limits the natural cleansing effect of humidity and rainfall on the air. The plateau's topography can also trap pollutants, especially during periods of low wind speed, exacerbating local air quality challenges. The surrounding landscape’s mix of agriculture and the proximity to a larger industrial area create a complex interplay affecting Guttal’s air quality.
Guttal’s air quality experiences a distinct seasonal cycle dictated by the region’s tropical climate and monsoon patterns. The dry season, typically spanning from March to May, often witnesses a noticeable increase in particulate matter. This is largely attributable to increased biomass burning for agricultural purposes – clearing fields after harvest and preparing land for the next planting season. Reduced rainfall and lower humidity during these months also contribute to the persistence of pollutants. Temperature inversions, common during the cooler nights, trap pollutants close to the ground, further degrading air quality. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings relief as heavy rainfall effectively washes away particulate matter and reduces the frequency of temperature inversions. However, the onset of the monsoon can initially be accompanied by increased humidity and fog, which can temporarily reduce visibility and trap pollutants. October and November mark a transitional period, with decreasing rainfall and gradually increasing temperatures. Agricultural activities resume, leading to a gradual rise in pollution levels. December and January are generally cooler months, with occasional fog, which can again lead to localized pollution trapping. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during the dry season (March-May) and be mindful of potential fog-related issues during the transitional months. Outdoor activities are generally more favourable during the monsoon season, although sudden showers can occur.
