Mukkūdal, a small town in Tamil Nadu, India (8.7431°N, 77.5225°E), is situated within the fertile plains of the state’s southern region. With a population of approximately 18,420, it’s characterized by a predominantly rural landscape transitioning into localized urban pockets. The terrain is largely flat, typical of the coastal plains, with a gentle slope towards the east. Mukkūdal’s location isn’t directly coastal, but benefits from the moderating influence of the Gulf of Mannar, approximately 60km to the southeast. This proximity contributes to high humidity levels. The surrounding area is heavily agricultural, dominated by rice paddies and coconut groves, with smaller areas dedicated to spice cultivation. While not a major industrial hub itself, Mukkūdal lies within reach of larger industrial zones in nearby cities like Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, contributing to regional pollution transport. The urban-rural gradient is pronounced; the town centre exhibits denser construction and traffic, while the periphery remains largely agricultural. This gradient directly impacts air quality, with higher concentrations of pollutants near roadways and commercial areas. Dust from agricultural activities, particularly during harvest seasons, also plays a role. The relatively flat topography limits natural dispersion of pollutants, potentially exacerbating localized air quality issues.
Mukkūdal experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, heavily influencing its air quality. The dry season, from January to May, sees consistently higher particulate matter concentrations due to reduced rainfall and increased dust suspension from agricultural lands and unpaved roads. Hot, dry winds exacerbate the issue, carrying pollutants further. February and March are typically the least favourable months for outdoor activity, particularly for those with respiratory conditions. The southwest monsoon arrives in June, bringing significant rainfall that washes away pollutants, resulting in a temporary improvement in air quality. However, increased humidity can also foster mould growth, impacting sensitive individuals. The northeast monsoon, from October to December, is the primary rainfall season, offering the most sustained period of cleaner air. November and December are generally the best months for outdoor activities. Temperature inversions, common during the cooler months (December-February), can trap pollutants near ground level, worsening air quality even with lower emissions. Fog, prevalent during the transition periods, further reduces visibility and can concentrate pollutants. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions – should limit outdoor exposure during peak pollution periods.
