Pudupattanam, a small town in Tamil Nadu, India (12.5037°N, 80.1507°E), is situated within the broader Coromandel Coast plain. Its geography is characterised by relatively flat terrain, typical of the region, with an elevation generally below 100 meters. This low-lying position makes it susceptible to localised flooding during heavy rainfall events. The town’s proximity to the Bay of Bengal, approximately 20-30 kilometers east, introduces a maritime influence on its climate, but also means it’s vulnerable to sea breezes carrying pollutants from coastal industrial areas. Surrounding Pudupattanam is a mix of agricultural land – primarily paddy fields and coconut groves – and increasingly, small-scale industrial activity related to textiles and food processing. The urban-rural gradient is fairly sharp; the town itself is compact, quickly giving way to agricultural landscapes. This proximity to agricultural practices introduces potential for seasonal biomass burning contributing to particulate matter. The lack of significant topographical features hinders natural dispersion of pollutants, creating a tendency for air to become stagnant, particularly during calmer weather conditions. The regional wind patterns, influenced by the monsoon systems, play a crucial role in pollutant transport and dispersion, but can also concentrate pollutants during periods of low wind speed. The town’s small size doesn’t preclude it from experiencing the impacts of regional air pollution trends.
Pudupattanam’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern. The pre-monsoon months of April and May bring the worst conditions, with high temperatures and stagnant air trapping dust and emissions from local industries and vehicles. This period sees increased respiratory complaints. The arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in June-September offers temporary relief, as rainfall washes away pollutants and wind speeds increase, improving air circulation. However, increased humidity can also foster mould growth, impacting indoor air quality. October-November sees a transition period, with declining rainfall and a return to calmer conditions, leading to a gradual deterioration in air quality. The Northeast Monsoon, though less intense than the Southwest, can still bring periods of improved air quality through rainfall. The cooler, drier months of December-February generally offer the most favourable conditions, with lower temperatures and better dispersion. However, temperature inversions, where a layer of warm air traps cooler air near the ground, can still occur, concentrating pollutants. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor activity during the pre-monsoon season and periods of temperature inversion. Monitoring local weather forecasts and avoiding peak traffic hours are also advisable.
