Tenambākkam, a small town nestled in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu, India, occupies a geographically significant position within the broader Chennai metropolitan area. Located at approximately 12.81° N latitude and 79.73° E longitude, the town sits on a relatively flat alluvial plain, a legacy of the Palar River's historical course. This terrain, characteristic of the Coromandel Coast, contributes to a generally low elevation, rarely exceeding 30 meters above sea level. The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of agricultural fields – predominantly rice paddies and vegetable farms – interspersed with small villages and pockets of scrubland. The urban–rural gradient is gradual, with Tenambākkam exhibiting a distinctly rural character despite its proximity to Chennai. The town’s location, just southwest of Chennai, places it within the sphere of influence of the city’s industrial and transportation activities. While not directly within a major industrial belt, the prevailing winds often carry pollutants from Chennai’s manufacturing zones and the bustling Chennai Port. The Palar River, though significantly reduced in flow, still influences the local microclimate and contributes to humidity levels. The coastal proximity also means the town is susceptible to sea breezes, which can sometimes disperse pollutants, but also carry saline aerosols. The flat topography and limited natural barriers exacerbate the potential for pollutant accumulation, particularly during periods of stagnant air. The surrounding agricultural practices, including fertilizer use and occasional crop burning, can also contribute to localized air quality issues.
Tenambākkam’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern dictated by the region’s tropical climate and monsoon cycles. The period from March to May, the pre-monsoon season, typically witnesses the poorest air quality. High temperatures and low relative humidity create stable atmospheric conditions, often leading to temperature inversions where cooler air is trapped beneath a layer of warmer air, preventing vertical mixing and trapping pollutants near the ground. This is compounded by increased agricultural activity, including fertilizer application and, occasionally, controlled burning of crop residue, releasing particulate matter and other emissions. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings a welcome respite. The southwest monsoon winds sweep across the region, effectively flushing out pollutants and significantly improving air quality. October and November mark the post-monsoon transition, with gradually increasing temperatures and decreasing rainfall, leading to a slow deterioration in air quality. Finally, December and January represent the cooler, drier months, with relatively moderate air quality, although fog formation can occasionally trap pollutants, particularly in the early mornings. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during the pre-monsoon months, limiting outdoor exertion during peak pollution periods. Maintaining indoor air quality through ventilation and air purification can also be beneficial. The monsoon months generally offer the most favourable conditions for outdoor activities, while the post-monsoon transition requires increased vigilance regarding air quality reports and potential health impacts.
