Laterza, nestled in the heart of Puglia, Italy, occupies a unique geographic position within the Murge plateau. Situated at coordinates 40.6333, 16.8000, the town is characterised by rolling hills and a predominantly agricultural landscape. The terrain is gently undulating, rising to approximately 330 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Laterza isn’t directly coastal, lying roughly 30 kilometers inland from the Ionian Sea, but benefits from the moderating influence of maritime air masses. The surrounding area is dominated by olive groves, vineyards, and wheat fields, typical of the Puglian agricultural belt. While Laterza itself isn’t heavily industrialised, the broader region experiences some industrial activity concentrated around Taranto, a significant port city to the east. This distance, however, means Laterza is often impacted by long-range transport of pollutants. The urban-rural gradient is quite pronounced; the town is a relatively small centre surrounded by extensive farmland, influencing local wind patterns and pollutant dispersion. The limestone bedrock prevalent in the Murge can also contribute to dust formation, particularly during drier periods, impacting particulate matter concentrations. The town’s morphology, with narrow streets and traditional buildings, can also trap pollutants, creating localised air quality variations.
Laterza’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern, largely dictated by meteorological conditions and agricultural practices. Summer months (June-August) often see relatively good air quality, driven by prevailing winds that disperse pollutants and infrequent rainfall which washes them away. However, high temperatures can promote ozone formation, a secondary pollutant. Autumn (September-November) brings increased agricultural activity, including harvesting and land preparation, potentially raising particulate matter from field work. This coincides with the onset of temperature inversions, trapping pollutants near the ground. Winter (December-February) is typically the period of poorest air quality. Reduced sunlight limits pollutant dispersion, and heating systems, often utilising wood or biomass, contribute to particulate matter and carbon monoxide emissions. Fog, common in the Murge during winter, exacerbates these conditions. Spring (March-May) sees a gradual improvement as temperatures rise and rainfall increases, but pollen counts are high, impacting those with allergies. Sensitive individuals – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit strenuous outdoor activity during winter and spring. Avoiding peak agricultural periods in autumn can also be beneficial. Monitoring wind direction is crucial; winds from the east may carry pollutants from the industrial areas near Taranto.
