Ambatosoratra, nestled within the Toamasina Province of Madagascar, occupies a geographically significant position on the eastern coast. Located at approximately -17.6134 latitude and 48.5140 longitude, the town’s setting is characterized by a gently sloping terrain transitioning from the coastal plains towards the Analamazaotra-Masoala Protected Area, a vast expanse of rainforest. This proximity to a major biodiversity hotspot influences the local environment, though the urban footprint remains relatively small, with a population of around 20,000. The town benefits from its adjacency to the Indian Ocean, moderating temperatures and influencing prevailing wind patterns. The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of small-scale agriculture – primarily vanilla, cloves, and rice cultivation – interspersed with pockets of dense tropical forest. To the west, the terrain gradually rises, creating a natural barrier that can trap pollutants under certain meteorological conditions. The urban–rural gradient is relatively sharp; Ambatosoratra itself is a compact settlement, quickly giving way to agricultural lands and then the dense rainforest. While large-scale industrial activity is limited within the immediate vicinity, the proximity to Toamasina, Madagascar’s primary port city, means that some industrial emissions and shipping-related pollution can be transported via prevailing winds. The coastal location also makes the town susceptible to sea salt aerosol deposition, which can contribute to particulate matter in the air. The elevation, though modest, plays a role in local air circulation patterns, potentially leading to localized areas of stagnant air.
Ambatosoratra’s tropical climate dictates a distinct wet and dry season pattern, profoundly impacting air quality. The wet season, typically spanning November to April, brings frequent rainfall and high humidity. While the rain naturally helps to cleanse the atmosphere by removing particulate matter, the increased humidity can exacerbate respiratory issues for sensitive individuals. The dry season, from May to October, is characterized by lower rainfall and increased sunshine, but also a greater propensity for stagnant air conditions. During this period, particularly in July and August, temperature inversions can occur, trapping pollutants closer to the ground. These inversions happen when a layer of warm air sits above cooler air, preventing vertical mixing. The prevailing easterly trade winds, common throughout the year, can transport pollutants from Toamasina and surrounding agricultural areas, impacting Ambatosoratra’s air quality. Fog, more frequent during the transition months (October and November), can also trap pollutants, reducing visibility and increasing respiratory irritation. The agricultural practices prevalent in the surrounding areas, including burning of vegetation after harvest, contribute to seasonal spikes in particulate matter, especially during the dry season. Individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions should exercise caution during the dry season, particularly when agricultural burning is occurring. Young children and the elderly are also more vulnerable and should limit prolonged outdoor exposure during periods of stagnant air or fog. Maintaining good hydration and avoiding strenuous activity during these times is advisable.
