Dianguirdé, a town in the Kayes Region of Mali, sits at approximately 14.4940°N latitude and 9.0150°W longitude. The town’s geography is defined by its location within the Sahel, a transitional zone between the Sahara Desert to the north and the Sudanian Savanna to the south. The terrain is generally flat to gently undulating, characteristic of the region’s lateritic plateaus. Dianguirdé’s elevation is relatively low, contributing to limited atmospheric dispersion of pollutants. The surrounding landscape is predominantly savanna woodland, interspersed with agricultural lands dedicated to millet, sorghum, and cotton cultivation. The town is not directly adjacent to a major body of water, though seasonal streams and small ponds appear during the rainy season. While not a heavily industrialized center, Dianguirdé serves as a regional market town, with associated transport activity and small-scale processing of agricultural products. The urban-rural gradient is quite sharp; the town itself is relatively compact, quickly giving way to rural agricultural areas. Dust from agricultural practices and unpaved roads is a significant factor influencing local air quality, exacerbated by the dry climate and wind patterns. The lack of substantial vegetation cover further limits natural air purification processes. This combination of factors creates a localized environment prone to particulate matter accumulation.
Dianguirdé experiences a pronounced wet and dry season cycle, heavily influencing air quality. The dry season, roughly from November to May, is characterized by consistently high temperatures and very low humidity. This period sees the worst air quality due to increased dust resuspension from agricultural activities, vehicle traffic on unpaved roads, and the lack of rainfall to cleanse the atmosphere. Harmattan winds, blowing from the Sahara, further contribute to particulate matter concentrations. February and March are typically the most challenging months for respiratory health. The transition to the wet season, beginning in June, brings a gradual improvement in air quality as rainfall suppresses dust. July and August, the peak of the rainy season, offer the cleanest air, with frequent precipitation effectively washing away pollutants. However, increased humidity can also promote mold growth indoors, posing a separate health concern. September and October see a return to drier conditions and a gradual deterioration in air quality. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions – should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the dry season and consider using masks when dust levels are high. Monitoring local conditions and staying indoors during peak dust events is crucial.
