Guioyo, situated in the Koulikoro Region of Mali, lies at approximately 13.5033°N latitude and 8.2453°W longitude. The city occupies a relatively flat terrain typical of the Sahelian zone, a transitional ecosystem between the Sahara Desert to the north and the Sudanian Savanna to the south. Its elevation is modest, contributing to limited natural dispersion of pollutants. Guioyo is positioned inland, away from major bodies of water like the Niger River, though smaller, seasonal streams and tributaries are present. The surrounding landscape is predominantly savanna grassland and agricultural land, with millet, sorghum, and cotton being key crops. This agricultural activity, while vital to the local economy, introduces particulate matter through land preparation, harvesting, and potential burning of crop residue. The urban-rural gradient is fairly sharp; Guioyo serves as a market town and administrative centre for a largely rural hinterland. Dust from unpaved roads and open fields is a significant contributor to baseline particulate levels. Limited industrial activity within Guioyo itself means that the primary air quality concerns stem from domestic sources – cooking fires, waste burning – and regional dust transport. The city’s location within the Sahel makes it vulnerable to long-range transport of dust from the Sahara, exacerbating particulate matter concentrations, particularly during the dry season.
Guioyo experiences a distinct wet and dry season, heavily influencing air quality. The dry season, roughly November to May, is characterised by consistently high temperatures and minimal rainfall. This period sees the worst air quality due to increased dust resuspension from the arid landscape and widespread use of biomass fuels for cooking and heating. Harmattan winds, blowing from the Sahara, further contribute to particulate matter pollution, peaking between December and February. Outdoor activity should be limited during these months, especially for those with respiratory conditions. The transition to the wet season, around June, brings a temporary improvement as rainfall suppresses dust and washes pollutants from the air. However, increased humidity can also lead to localised mould growth, potentially affecting sensitive individuals. The wet season, lasting until October, generally offers the best air quality, though localised burning of agricultural waste after harvest can cause temporary spikes in pollution. August and September are typically the clearest months. During the wet season, while dust is reduced, increased humidity can exacerbate respiratory issues for asthmatics. Monitoring local fire activity is crucial, and avoiding areas with visible smoke is advised. Overall, the dry season presents the greatest health risks related to air quality in Guioyo.
