Perote, nestled in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, occupies a unique geographic position within the central highlands. This altitude is a defining characteristic, placing Perote within a basin surrounded by the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains. Temperature inversions, common during the cooler, drier mornings, trap pollutants near the ground, worsening conditions. February and March are typically the months with the poorest air quality. Winds are generally light during these periods, further hindering dispersion.
