Durleşti, a municipality within the Chisinau administrative area of Moldova, occupies a gently undulating landscape in the central Moldovan plateau. Situated at coordinates 47.0178°N, 28.7625°E, the town’s elevation is approximately 140 meters above sea level. This position, while not dramatically hilly, influences local air circulation patterns. The surrounding terrain is predominantly agricultural, characterised by extensive vineyards and arable land, typical of the Codri region. Chisinau, Moldova’s capital, lies immediately adjacent, creating a significant urban-rural gradient. Durleşti effectively functions as a commuter town for Chisinau, with a growing residential population. The Bâc River flows nearby, but its limited flow and seasonal variations don’t provide substantial atmospheric cleansing. While not heavily industrialised itself, Durleşti’s proximity to Chisinau’s industrial zones – concentrated to the east and south – means it’s susceptible to pollutant transport. The prevailing winds, generally from the northwest, can carry pollutants from these sources. The lack of significant natural barriers, like mountains, allows for relatively easy pollutant dispersion, but also means the area is vulnerable to regional air quality issues. The agricultural practices, including fertilizer use and potential burning of agricultural waste, contribute to localised particulate matter and ammonia emissions, impacting air quality.
Durleşti’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern. Spring (March-May) sees a gradual worsening as temperatures rise and agricultural activity intensifies, with burning of post-winter vegetation contributing to particulate matter. Pollen counts are also high, exacerbating respiratory issues. Summer (June-August) often experiences relatively better air quality due to increased wind speeds and atmospheric mixing, though ozone formation can be a concern on hot, sunny days. However, prolonged dry spells can lead to dust suspension from agricultural lands. Autumn (September-November) is typically the most challenging period. Temperature inversions become frequent, trapping pollutants near the ground, and the burning of agricultural residues peaks, leading to significant particulate matter increases. November is often the worst month. Winter (December-February) brings colder temperatures and reduced agricultural activity, leading to lower biogenic emissions. However, increased reliance on solid fuel heating in residential areas, particularly coal and wood, elevates particulate matter and sulfur dioxide levels. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor exertion during autumn and winter months. Monitoring wind direction is crucial; winds from the east or south bring pollutants from Chisinau’s industrial areas.
