Otukpo, situated in Benue State, Nigeria, occupies a pivotal position within the transitional zone between the savanna and rainforest ecosystems. Located at approximately 7.1904°N latitude and 8.1300°E longitude, the city rests on relatively flat terrain, typical of the lower Benue River basin, at an elevation of around 120 meters above sea level. This low elevation contributes to potential temperature inversions, trapping pollutants near the ground. The Benue River, a major waterway, flows nearby, influencing local humidity and potentially contributing to localized fog formation. Otukpo serves as a significant commercial hub for agricultural produce from the surrounding areas, primarily yam, cassava, and maize. While not heavily industrialized, the city experiences increasing vehicular traffic and small-scale industrial activity, including food processing and building material production. The urban-rural gradient is pronounced, with densely populated market areas contrasting with more sparsely populated residential zones and agricultural lands extending outwards. Dust from unpaved roads and agricultural activities, combined with emissions from generators (a common power source), significantly impact local air quality. The surrounding landscape is predominantly savanna woodland, prone to seasonal bush fires which contribute to particulate matter pollution. This geographical setting creates a unique set of challenges for maintaining clean air.
Otukpo experiences a distinct wet and dry season pattern, heavily influencing air quality. The dry season, spanning roughly November to March, is characterized by harmattan winds blowing from the Sahara Desert, carrying substantial amounts of dust and particulate matter. This period consistently sees the poorest air quality, with visibility often reduced and respiratory issues exacerbated. January and February are particularly challenging months. The transition period, March to April, brings increased agricultural burning as farmers prepare their land, further degrading air quality. The wet season, from May to October, offers a reprieve. Heavy rainfall effectively washes away pollutants, and increased humidity suppresses dust. However, stagnant air during periods of reduced rainfall within the wet season can lead to localized pollution build-up from vehicle emissions and generator use. September, as the wet season wanes, can see a resurgence of dust. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor activity during the dry season and periods of agricultural burning. Maintaining good ventilation indoors and using air purifiers are recommended. The increased rainfall during the wet season generally provides better conditions for outdoor activity, but awareness of localized pollution sources remains important.
