Solana, a municipality in the province of Cagayan, Philippines, occupies a strategic position within the Cagayan Valley, a broad, fertile plain bordered by the Cordillera Central mountain range to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. Located at approximately 17.65°N latitude and 121.69°E longitude, Solana’s terrain is predominantly flat, typical of alluvial plains formed by the Cagayan River, the largest river basin in the Philippines. This flatness facilitates agricultural activity, with rice paddies dominating the landscape, alongside corn and other crops. The municipality’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean introduces a maritime influence, moderating temperatures but also exposing it to seasonal typhoons and associated rainfall. While Solana isn’t heavily industrialized, the broader Cagayan Valley experiences some industrial activity related to agriculture (rice mills, processing plants) and limited manufacturing. Air quality is significantly influenced by this agricultural landscape, with seasonal burning of crop residue contributing to particulate matter. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp, with Solana town proper being the main built-up area surrounded by extensive agricultural lands. The prevailing winds, often influenced by the Pacific high-pressure system, play a crucial role in dispersing or concentrating pollutants, particularly during calmer periods. The low elevation and flat terrain can exacerbate the impact of temperature inversions, trapping pollutants near the ground.
Solana experiences a pronounced wet and dry season, dictating the patterns of air quality throughout the year. The dry season, typically from March to May, sees a build-up of particulate matter from agricultural activities. Farmers often engage in controlled burns to clear fields after harvest, releasing smoke and contributing to haze. This period is generally less windy, allowing pollutants to accumulate. Conversely, the wet season, from June to November, brings frequent rainfall and typhoons, effectively washing away pollutants and improving air quality. However, typhoons can also stir up dust and debris, temporarily worsening conditions. December to February represents a transitional period with generally cooler temperatures and more stable air. The northeast monsoon (Amihan) brings cooler, drier air, but can also contribute to stagnant air masses if winds are weak. Outdoor activity is best suited during the peak of the wet season (July-September) when rainfall is frequent and winds are stronger. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor exposure during the dry season, particularly in March and April, and be prepared for potential irritations during typhoon events. Fog can also occur during the cooler months, trapping pollutants.
