Nu‘ayjah, a district within the municipality of Ad Dawḩah, Qatar, occupies a low-lying coastal plain along the Persian Gulf. Its coordinates (25.2525° N, 51.5592° E) place it firmly within the arid subtropical climate zone of the Arabian Peninsula. The terrain is predominantly flat, composed of sand dunes and sedimentary rock, with minimal natural elevation changes. This flatness contributes to limited natural dispersion of pollutants. The city’s proximity to the Gulf introduces a significant source of humidity, but also facilitates sea breeze circulations which can, at times, offer some pollutant removal. However, these breezes can also transport salt spray inland, contributing to particulate matter. Surrounding Nu‘ayjah is a rapidly expanding urban landscape, part of the greater Doha metropolitan area, with increasing construction activity and associated dust emissions. While Qatar’s economy is heavily reliant on hydrocarbons, major industrial zones are generally located further north, lessening their direct impact on Nu‘ayjah’s immediate air quality, though regional transport is a factor. The urban-rural gradient is steep, transitioning quickly from dense residential and commercial areas to desert landscapes. This rapid transition impacts local wind patterns and pollutant concentration gradients. The lack of significant vegetation further limits natural air purification processes.
Nu‘ayjah’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern dictated by Qatar’s climate. Summer (May-September) brings the worst conditions. Intense heat creates stable atmospheric layers, leading to temperature inversions that trap pollutants close to the ground. The ‘Khamsin’ winds, hot and dry, exacerbate dust storms, significantly increasing particulate matter concentrations. Outdoor activity should be minimized during these months, particularly for those with respiratory conditions. Autumn (October-November) offers a brief respite, with cooler temperatures and shifting winds improving dispersion. However, dust from regional sources remains a concern. Winter (December-February) generally presents the cleanest air, with moderate temperatures, increased humidity, and occasional rainfall that helps to wash away pollutants. This is the most favourable time for outdoor activities. Spring (March-April) sees a gradual increase in temperatures and dust levels as the wind patterns shift again. Fog can also form during spring mornings, trapping pollutants. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses – should monitor conditions closely and limit exposure during peak pollution periods, regardless of season. Maintaining good ventilation indoors and using air purifiers can provide additional protection.
