The city’s terrain is characterized by the rolling, forested hills of the Zeya-Bureya Plain, which creates a distinct topographical basin effect. This geomorphology is critical to its urban character; the city serves as a vital transit node along the Trans-Siberian Railway, which has historically dictated its industrial footprint and spatial layout. The surrounding landscape consists of vast taiga forests and agricultural steppes, creating a sharp urban–rural gradient where the dense, human-built environment meets expansive, sparsely populated Siberian wilderness.
