The surrounding landscape is dominated by agricultural lands – primarily banana plantations, maize, and sesame farms – alongside scattered woodland and shrubland. This agricultural intensity is a key factor influencing local air quality, with seasonal burning of agricultural residue and potential pesticide/fertilizer drift. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp; Afmadow serves as a regional market centre, drawing populations from surrounding rural villages.
