Puttalam, nestled in North Western Province, Sri Lanka, occupies a geographically significant position on the island’s northwest coast. Its coordinates (8.0330, 79.8260) place it within a low-lying coastal plain, characterized by gently undulating terrain and extensive lagoons, most notably the Puttalam Lagoon, a vital brackish water ecosystem. The city’s urban fabric is a blend of traditional settlements and more recent development, reflecting its historical role as a fishing and salt-producing hub. The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of agricultural land – primarily paddy fields and coconut plantations – interspersed with salt pans, which are a defining feature of the region. This agricultural activity, combined with the proximity to the lagoon, influences local air quality dynamics.
