Gampaha is surrounded by a rich agricultural landscape, primarily rubber and coconut plantations, interspersed with increasingly dense residential areas. The proximity to the Indian Ocean introduces a maritime influence, providing some degree of atmospheric moisture but also contributing to humidity which can trap pollutants. The city is experiencing rapid urbanisation, leading to increased vehicular traffic and construction activity – major sources of particulate matter.
