This low-lying geography makes Cottica particularly vulnerable to flooding during the intense rainy seasons. The city sits near the Suriname River, a vital waterway for transportation and commerce, and is surrounded by dense tropical rainforest, a landscape dominated by towering trees, intricate undergrowth, and a rich biodiversity. The surrounding area is a mosaic of small-scale agriculture, primarily focused on rice cultivation and fruit farming, contributing to localized emissions. While Cottica isn't directly adjacent to major industrial belts, its proximity to Paramaribo, Suriname’s capital and industrial hub, means that some industrial pollutants can be transported via prevailing winds.
