Kloten, nestled in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, occupies a geographically strategic position within the Swiss Plateau. This plateau, a gently undulating landscape formed by glacial activity during the last Ice Age, provides a relatively flat terrain at an elevation of approximately 439 meters (1,440 feet). The city’s location is intrinsically linked to Zurich Airport, Switzerland’s largest international airport, which dominates much of the surrounding area. This proximity significantly influences local air quality, as detailed later. Kloten isn’t directly on a major body of water, but benefits from the moderating influence of nearby Lake Zurich, approximately 15 kilometers to the south. The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of agricultural land, particularly farmland producing dairy and grains, interspersed with pockets of light industrial activity concentrated around the airport and transport links. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp; moving north and west quickly transitions into more extensive agricultural areas and forested hills. The prevailing winds, often originating from the west, carry pollutants across the plateau, impacting Kloten’s air quality. The city’s position within a valley can also contribute to temperature inversions, trapping pollutants near the ground, particularly during winter months. The topography, combined with the airport’s emissions, creates a unique air quality challenge for Kloten.
Kloten’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern. Winter, from December to February, typically sees the poorest air quality. Low temperatures and frequent temperature inversions trap pollutants emitted from heating systems and airport activity close to the ground. Calm wind conditions exacerbate this, leading to higher concentrations of particulate matter. Spring (March-May) brings gradual improvement as temperatures rise and winds become more frequent, dispersing pollutants. However, agricultural activities, such as fertilizer application, can contribute to ammonia levels. Summer (June-August) generally offers the cleanest air, with strong winds and higher temperatures promoting dispersion. However, increased ozone formation due to sunlight and warm temperatures can be a concern. Autumn (September-November) sees a return to poorer conditions as heating demand increases and temperature inversions become more common. Fog, prevalent in autumn and winter, further reduces visibility and traps pollutants. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions – should limit strenuous outdoor activity during winter and autumn months. Monitoring pollen levels is also crucial in spring. Avoiding peak traffic hours near the airport can also reduce exposure to localized emissions. Overall, spring and summer offer the most favourable conditions for outdoor activities.
