Zhudong, nestled in Hsinchu County, Taiwan, occupies a geographically significant position within the island's western foothills. Located at approximately 24.7366° N, 121.0916° E, the city sits at an elevation ranging from 150 to 350 meters above sea level, contributing to a varied microclimate. Zhudong’s terrain is characterized by gently sloping hills and valleys, a result of the island’s complex geological history and the uplift of the Taiwan Central Range. The surrounding landscape is a blend of agricultural land – primarily rice paddies and fruit orchards – and increasingly, suburban development. To the west lies the relatively flat coastal plain, while the eastern boundary is defined by the rising slopes of the mountains. This proximity to both agricultural zones and the burgeoning Hsinchu Science Park, a major industrial and technological hub, creates a complex interplay of potential pollution sources. The city benefits from the proximity of the Dahan River, which influences local humidity and temperature patterns. The urban–rural gradient around Zhudong is gradual, with pockets of rural character persisting even within the city limits. This blend of urban and rural elements, combined with the valley topography, can trap pollutants under certain meteorological conditions, impacting local air quality. The prevailing winds, often originating from the southwest during the monsoon season, play a crucial role in dispersing or concentrating pollutants, making Zhudong’s air quality sensitive to regional weather patterns and industrial activity in the broader Hsinchu area.
Zhudong’s air quality experiences a distinct seasonal cycle heavily influenced by Taiwan’s subtropical climate and monsoon patterns. The warmer, drier months (April to September) often see a gradual increase in particulate matter, primarily due to agricultural burning in surrounding rural areas preparing fields for the next planting season. While not as intense as some regions, these practices contribute to elevated levels, particularly during September and October. The northeast monsoon season (October to March) brings cooler temperatures and increased humidity, often accompanied by periods of fog and drizzle. These conditions can trap pollutants, leading to periods of reduced visibility and potentially impacting air quality. Temperature inversions, common during the winter months, further exacerbate this issue by preventing vertical mixing of the atmosphere. The frequent fog, while visually striking, can also hold and concentrate pollutants close to the ground. Spring (March-May) generally offers the most favourable air quality, with increased wind speeds helping to disperse pollutants. Summer (June-August) can be variable, with occasional periods of high humidity and stagnant air. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should be particularly mindful during the autumn months (September-November) and during periods of persistent fog or temperature inversions in the winter. Outdoor activities are generally best enjoyed during the spring months, when air quality tends to be at its best. Careful monitoring of local weather conditions and any public health advisories is always recommended.
