Dehmoí, nestled within the fertile valley of Sughd Province in Tajikistan, occupies a geographically significant position at approximately 40.2167°N latitude and 69.5167°E longitude. The city’s elevation, typical of the region, contributes to a continental climate with substantial temperature variations. Surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Pamir-Alay mountains to the east and south, and the more gently rolling foothills to the west, Dehmoí benefits from a degree of natural shielding, but also experiences localized weather patterns influenced by these topographic features. The city lies relatively close to the Zeravshan River, a vital water source and historically a key transport artery, though the immediate urban area isn’t directly on the riverbank. The surrounding landscape is predominantly agricultural, with extensive orchards and fields cultivating fruits and vegetables, a major economic driver for the region. A gradual urban-rural gradient exists, transitioning from denser residential areas in the city centre to more dispersed agricultural land and small villages. This proximity to agricultural activity, including potential burning of crop residue, and limited industrial activity within the immediate vicinity, are key factors influencing local air quality. The valley’s topography can also trap pollutants during periods of calm weather, exacerbating air quality issues.
Dehmoí’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern. Spring (March-May) sees a gradual improvement after the winter months, but agricultural burning to prepare fields for planting can cause temporary spikes in particulate matter. Summers (June-August) are generally the clearest, with prevailing winds dispersing pollutants and higher temperatures promoting atmospheric mixing. However, heatwaves can lead to increased ozone formation. Autumn (September-November) is often the most challenging period. Cooler temperatures create temperature inversions, trapping pollutants close to the ground, and the burning of agricultural waste after harvest significantly degrades air quality. This is a period when respiratory issues are likely to be more prevalent. Winters (December-February) bring cold, stable air masses, and increased reliance on solid fuel for heating, leading to elevated levels of particulate matter and sulfur dioxide. Fog is common, further reducing visibility and trapping pollutants. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions – should limit outdoor exertion during autumn and winter. Spring and summer offer the most favourable conditions for outdoor activities, but even then, monitoring local conditions is advisable.
