Sikhio, nestled within Nakhon Ratchasima Province in northeastern Thailand (Isan), occupies a geographically significant position. Located at coordinates 14.9000, 101.7167, the city sits on a relatively flat plain, typical of much of Isan, with an elevation around 170-200 meters above sea level. This gently undulating terrain contributes to limited natural air dispersion. The surrounding landscape is predominantly agricultural, dominated by rice paddies and increasingly, cassava and sugarcane plantations. These agricultural practices, while vital to the local economy, are a significant source of particulate matter through seasonal burning for land preparation. Sikhio isn’t directly adjacent to major bodies of water, though it’s within the broader Chao Phraya River basin, influencing humidity levels. The urban-rural gradient is quite sharp; the city centre, with a population of approximately 18,209, quickly transitions to rural farmland. While not a major industrial hub itself, Sikhio’s proximity to larger industrial areas within Nakhon Ratchasima province means it can experience transboundary pollution. The lack of substantial natural barriers – hills or forests – to trap pollutants exacerbates the potential for air quality issues, particularly during the dry season when winds are weaker and inversion layers are more common. This combination of factors makes Sikhio particularly vulnerable to localised and regional air pollution events.
Sikhio’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern dictated by the tropical monsoon climate. The dry season, roughly November to April, presents the most challenging conditions. Reduced rainfall means less atmospheric cleansing, and agricultural burning for land preparation intensifies, releasing substantial particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10). January to March are typically the months when outdoor activity should be minimised, especially for those with respiratory conditions. Temperature inversions, common during cooler mornings in the dry season, trap pollutants near ground level. The onset of the monsoon season in May brings a dramatic improvement. Heavy rainfall washes away pollutants, and increased wind speeds disperse them. June to October generally offers the best air quality, though localised flooding can sometimes disrupt transportation and contribute to mould growth indoors. However, even during the wet season, dust from unpaved roads and construction can be a concern. November sees a gradual deterioration as the dry season approaches. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with asthma – should monitor conditions closely and limit strenuous outdoor activity during the dry season, and consider using air purifiers indoors. Staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure during peak pollution times are crucial health precautions.
