Çiğli, a district of Izmir Province in western Turkey, occupies a strategically important position along the northern coast of the Gulf of Izmir. Its coordinates (38.4833° N, 27.0500° E) place it within the Aegean Region, characterized by a Mediterranean climate and a complex topography. The terrain is relatively flat, transitioning from the coastal plain inland towards gently rolling hills. This flatness facilitates urban sprawl, and Çiğli has experienced significant population growth, currently housing over 214,000 residents. The proximity to the Gulf of Izmir is a defining feature, influencing local weather patterns and providing opportunities for maritime transport. However, it also limits atmospheric dispersion of pollutants. Surrounding Çiğli are agricultural lands, particularly olive groves and vineyards, alongside expanding industrial zones concentrated further inland towards Izmir city centre. These industrial activities, coupled with increasing vehicular traffic associated with Çiğli’s growth, contribute to localized air pollution. The urban-rural gradient is becoming increasingly blurred as Çiğli merges with the wider Izmir metropolitan area. The prevailing winds, generally from the north and northwest, can carry pollutants from the industrial heartland towards Çiğli, impacting air quality, particularly during periods of temperature inversion.
Çiğli’s air quality follows a distinct seasonal pattern. Spring (March-May) sees a gradual improvement after the winter months, though agricultural burning for land preparation can cause temporary spikes in particulate matter. Summer (June-August) typically offers the cleanest air, benefiting from strong sea breezes that disperse pollutants and higher temperatures promoting atmospheric mixing. However, increased ozone formation due to intense sunlight can be a concern. Autumn (September-November) marks a deterioration in air quality as heating systems are activated and temperature inversions become more frequent, trapping pollutants near the ground. This is often the most challenging period for respiratory health. Winter (December-February) experiences the poorest air quality, exacerbated by reduced sunlight, stagnant air masses, and increased reliance on coal and wood for heating in surrounding areas. Fog, common during winter mornings, further concentrates pollutants. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions – should limit outdoor exertion during autumn and winter.
