View full AQI details →Eşme, a town nestled within the Uşak Province of Turkey, occupies a geographically significant position within the Western Anatolian region. Located at approximately 38.4000° N, 28.9667° E, Eşme sits at an elevation of around 850 meters (2,789 feet) above sea level, contributing to a cooler climate compared to coastal areas. The town’s terrain is characterized by gently rolling hills and plains, typical of the surrounding Aegean region, transitioning from the foothills of the surrounding mountains. This topography influences local wind patterns, which can both disperse and concentrate pollutants. Eşme is surrounded by a predominantly agricultural landscape, with olive groves, vineyards, and cereal fields dominating the rural areas. While not directly adjacent to major bodies of water, the Gediz River basin lies within reasonable proximity, influencing regional humidity and weather systems. The urban–rural gradient around Eşme is gradual; the town itself is relatively small, with a population of just over 15,000, and blends seamlessly into the agricultural surroundings. There are no major industrial belts immediately adjacent to Eşme, minimizing direct industrial emissions. However, the town’s location within a broader agricultural zone means that seasonal agricultural practices, such as fertilizer application and harvesting, can contribute to localized air quality fluctuations. The surrounding landscape, largely open and agricultural, allows for relatively good air circulation, but can also be susceptible to dust and particulate matter carried by winds from the plains and nearby construction activities. The town’s position within a valley can, under certain meteorological conditions, lead to localized air stagnation.
Eşme’s air quality experiences a distinct seasonal cycle dictated by its Mediterranean climate. Summers (June-August) are typically hot and dry, with minimal rainfall. This period often sees a slight increase in particulate matter due to increased dust lifted by strong, hot winds and occasional agricultural burning, although the lack of significant industrial activity mitigates severe pollution. Autumn (September-November) brings a gradual cooling and increased precipitation, which helps to cleanse the air and reduce particulate concentrations. The prevailing winds shift, often bringing cleaner air from the west. Winter (December-February) is the most challenging period. Temperature inversions, common in valleys during winter nights, trap pollutants close to the ground, potentially leading to localized episodes of poorer air quality. Fog, frequently occurring during these months, further exacerbates this issue by reducing atmospheric mixing. Spring (March-May) is generally the most pleasant time for air quality, with moderate temperatures, increasing rainfall, and consistent winds that disperse pollutants. Outdoor activities are generally favored during spring and autumn. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during winter evenings and mornings, particularly when fog is present. Agricultural activities, particularly fertilizer application in spring, can temporarily impact local air quality. While Eşme doesn't experience a monsoon season, periods of heavy rainfall can significantly improve air quality by washing away pollutants.
