Satellite Beach, Florida, is a coastal city nestled on a barrier island along the Space Coast, approximately 70 miles east of Orlando. Its geography is defined by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, with the Indian River Lagoon forming its western boundary. The terrain is remarkably flat, typical of coastal plains, with elevations rarely exceeding 20 feet above sea level. This low elevation makes the city particularly vulnerable to storm surges and sea-level rise. The surrounding landscape is a mix of residential development, interspersed with pockets of maritime hammock forests and dune systems. Unlike many Florida cities, Satellite Beach lacks a significant industrial base within its immediate vicinity; however, the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to the north and the Port of Port Canaveral contribute to regional emissions. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp, transitioning quickly to agricultural lands and undeveloped coastal areas further inland. The constant sea breezes play a crucial role in dispersing pollutants, but can also transport them from regional sources. Satellite Beach experiences a distinct wet and dry season, heavily influencing air quality. The dry season, roughly November through April, generally presents the best air quality. Lower humidity and consistent northeast trade winds effectively flush out pollutants. However, occasional cold fronts can cause temperature inversions, trapping pollutants near the surface for short periods, particularly in December and January. The wet season, May through October, brings increased humidity, frequent thunderstorms, and a shift in wind patterns. While rainfall can temporarily cleanse the air, the increased humidity promotes the formation of ground-level ozone, peaking in June and July.
