Hồng Ngự, situated in the Đồng Tháp province of Vietnam, occupies a strategically important position within the Mekong Delta region. Its coordinates (10.8330° N, 105.2830° E) place it on relatively flat terrain, characteristic of the delta’s alluvial plains, with an average elevation of just a few meters above sea level. The city lies close to the Tiền River, a major distributary of the Mekong, significantly influencing local hydrology and climate. Surrounding Hồng Ngự is a predominantly agricultural landscape, dominated by rice paddies and fruit orchards – mangoes, rambutan, and durian are particularly prominent crops. This intensive agricultural activity, while vital to the regional economy, contributes to localized air quality challenges. To the west, the landscape gradually transitions into more forested areas, offering some natural air filtration. The urban–rural gradient around Hồng Ngự is relatively smooth; smaller villages and agricultural holdings are interspersed within the city limits and extend outwards. Industrial activity is limited, primarily focused on food processing related to the agricultural output, but the sheer volume of agricultural burning during harvest seasons poses a significant air quality concern. The delta’s low elevation and proximity to the river also make Hồng Ngự vulnerable to flooding, which can temporarily exacerbate air pollution by stirring up sediments and organic matter. The flat topography limits natural ventilation, potentially trapping pollutants within the city’s boundaries, especially during periods of stagnant air.
Hồng Ngự’s tropical climate dictates a distinct wet and dry season, profoundly impacting air quality. The dry season, typically from November to April, often witnesses the most concerning air quality conditions. Farmers conduct widespread burning of rice straw and agricultural waste to clear fields for the next planting cycle, releasing substantial particulate matter and other pollutants. This practice, combined with lower rainfall and reduced atmospheric mixing due to temperature inversions – where cooler air is trapped beneath a layer of warmer air – leads to pollutant accumulation. Fog, common during the cooler mornings of the dry season, further traps these pollutants close to ground level. The monsoon season, from May to October, brings increased rainfall and stronger winds, which generally help to disperse pollutants, leading to improved air quality. However, heavy rainfall can also lead to flooding, which, as mentioned previously, can temporarily worsen air quality. The high humidity during the monsoon season can also exacerbate respiratory issues for sensitive individuals. Outdoor activities are generally best enjoyed during the monsoon months, particularly June, July, and August, when rainfall is frequent and winds are more consistent. During the dry season, especially February and March, individuals with respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly should limit prolonged outdoor exposure and consider wearing masks when air quality is visibly affected by smoke or haze. The combination of agricultural practices and meteorological conditions creates a cyclical pattern of air quality fluctuations in Hồng Ngự.
