Tân Phong, a small town nestled within Thanh Hoa province in north-central Vietnam (19.7322° N, 105.7817° E), occupies a geographically significant position within the broader Red River Delta region. The town’s terrain is predominantly flat, characteristic of the delta’s alluvial plains, with gentle slopes leading towards the Ma River, a vital waterway that flows eastward towards the South China Sea. This proximity to the river influences local humidity and can contribute to stagnant air conditions under certain meteorological circumstances. Tân Phong’s urban character is that of a developing market town, serving as a local hub for agricultural trade and light industry, primarily focused on processing agricultural products like rice and maize cultivated in the surrounding fertile lands. The urban–rural gradient is relatively sharp; the town itself is compact, quickly transitioning to intensive agricultural fields and scattered rural settlements. To the west, the landscape gradually rises, hinting at the foothills of the Trường Sơn mountains, though these are distant and do not directly impact Tân Phong’s immediate microclimate. The surrounding landscape is dominated by rice paddies and small-scale farms, interspersed with villages. While large-scale industrial belts are not immediately adjacent, agricultural practices, including fertilizer use and occasional burning of crop residue, can contribute to localized air pollution episodes. The flat topography and limited natural barriers can exacerbate the accumulation of pollutants, particularly during periods of low wind speed and temperature inversions, impacting air quality within the town and its immediate vicinity.
Tân Phong’s air quality experiences a distinct seasonal pattern dictated by Vietnam’s monsoon climate. The wet season, typically spanning from May to October, brings frequent rainfall and high humidity, generally leading to improved air quality as precipitation washes away particulate matter. However, periods of prolonged rainfall can also result in stagnant air and increased levels of mold and fungal spores, impacting respiratory health. The dry season, from November to April, presents a more complex picture. While sunshine is abundant, this period is often characterized by lower rainfall and increased wind variability. Temperature inversions, common during the cooler months (December-February), trap pollutants near the ground, potentially leading to localized air quality degradation. Agricultural burning, a traditional practice for land clearing and residue disposal, is most prevalent during this period, significantly contributing to particulate pollution. March and April often see increased dust from nearby construction and agricultural activities. The monsoon winds, when they do blow, can help disperse pollutants, but their strength and direction are unpredictable. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during the dry season, particularly during periods of stagnant air or agricultural burning. Outdoor activities are generally more favourable during the wet season, although vigilance regarding humidity-related health concerns is advised. The transitional months of May and October can be unpredictable, with fluctuating weather patterns impacting air quality.
