Eldorado, nestled in the heart of Misiones Province, Argentina, occupies a unique geographic position within the Paranaense Rainforest. Located at coordinates -26.4000, -54.6333, the city sits on relatively flat terrain, part of the broader Eastern Lowlands, with an elevation generally below 200 meters. This low-lying landscape is heavily influenced by the proximity to the Paraná River and numerous smaller tributaries, creating a humid subtropical climate. The surrounding landscape is dominated by lush rainforest, transitioning into agricultural zones – primarily yerba mate and tea plantations – as one moves away from the city center. Eldorado’s urban character is defined by a blend of residential areas, commercial districts, and light industrial activity related to processing agricultural products. The urban-rural gradient is relatively sharp, with dense forest quickly enveloping the city limits. This proximity to both natural vegetation and agricultural practices significantly impacts air quality. Forest fires, common during drier periods, contribute particulate matter, while agricultural activities can release ammonia and pesticides. The city’s location within a valley can also trap pollutants, exacerbating air quality issues, particularly during temperature inversions. The prevailing winds, generally from the north-east, can transport pollutants from upstream sources.
Eldorado experiences a distinct wet and dry season rather than traditional four seasons. Air quality is generally best during the wetter months, from November to March, when frequent rainfall effectively washes pollutants from the atmosphere. However, even during this period, humidity can contribute to the formation of secondary pollutants. The dry season, spanning April to October, presents the greatest air quality challenges. This is when agricultural burning increases significantly, releasing substantial amounts of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and other harmful compounds. August and September are typically the worst months for smoke haze. Temperature inversions, common during cooler nights in the dry season, trap pollutants near the ground, further degrading air quality. Winds are generally lighter during these months, reducing dispersion. Sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions – should limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak pollution periods. Fog, prevalent in the cooler months, can also exacerbate respiratory issues by trapping pollutants. Monitoring wind direction is crucial; winds from agricultural areas signal potential exposure to smoke. The transition periods (November and April) can be unpredictable, with fluctuating air quality.
