Araçuaí, nestled in the Jequitinhonha River Valley of Minas Gerais, Brazil, occupies a geographically complex and historically significant position. Located at approximately -16.85°S, -42.07°W and an elevation averaging 750 meters above sea level, the city benefits from a relatively cool climate compared to lower-lying regions of Minas Gerais. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the rugged Serra do Espinhaço mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which significantly influences local weather patterns and air circulation. This range creates a rain shadow effect, impacting precipitation and contributing to localized microclimates. The Jequitinhonha River, a vital water source, meanders through the valley, moderating temperatures and providing a natural drainage system. Araçuaí’s urban character is that of a regional hub, serving a predominantly rural agricultural area. The surrounding region is characterized by small-scale farming, primarily focused on beans, corn, and coffee, with some livestock rearing. The urban–rural gradient is relatively sharp, with the city acting as a commercial and administrative center for the surrounding communities. The Serra do Espinhaço’s topography can trap pollutants, particularly during periods of low wind speed. While Araçuaí isn't directly adjacent to major industrial belts, the transport of goods and agricultural products through the region contributes to localized emissions. The valley’s enclosed nature, combined with the mountain ranges, can limit the dispersion of airborne pollutants, making air quality sensitive to regional weather conditions and agricultural practices.
Araçuaí experiences a tropical savanna climate, characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons rather than four traditional seasons. The dry season, typically from April to September, presents the greatest air quality challenges. During these months, reduced rainfall leads to lower atmospheric moisture, which inhibits the natural cleansing effect of precipitation. Furthermore, the lack of cloud cover increases solar radiation, promoting photochemical reactions that can contribute to ozone formation. Temperature inversions are more frequent during the dry season, trapping pollutants near the ground, particularly in the valley. The wind patterns during this period are often calm, further exacerbating the issue. Agricultural burning, a common practice for land clearing and crop residue disposal, significantly elevates particulate matter concentrations during the dry season, especially in August and September. The wet season, from October to March, brings increased rainfall and higher humidity, naturally washing away pollutants and diluting concentrations. Stronger winds also aid in dispersion. While the wet season generally offers improved air quality, periods of dense fog can temporarily trap pollutants, especially in the mornings. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should exercise caution during the dry season, limiting prolonged outdoor activity during peak sunlight hours and avoiding areas with visible smoke. Maintaining indoor air quality through proper ventilation and air filtration is also recommended during this period.
